Back in August 2011, I received an email from Barry Moore (proprietor of
Baseball Cap Supplies), who'd seen an old comic-book advertisement for the
Captain Atom "magic ring" posted on
Daniel Best's blog. (For those of you unfamiliar with this character,
Captain Atom was an Australian superhero, written and drawn by
Arthur Mather for Atlas Publications, Melbourne, back in 1948, and was one the Australia's best-selling comic books.)

Anyway, Barry mentioned to me that he still owned his
Captain Atom "magic ring", but admitted that it had seen better days - the "rubies" are missing from the Captain's eye-sockets and the silver varnish has largely...well, vanished! (Barry told me kids were encouraged to leave their
Captain Atom rings out in the sun, so that the "rubies" would give off mysterious green glow at night.) But Barry had stored both the
Captain Atom ring, and the accompanying gift card, in the same box in which he stored his stamp collection, which is why they've survived, more or less intact, to this day.
Barry very kindly sent me the accompanying photos of these items and said I was more than welcome to post them on my blog...which is what I intended to do, way back then, but for one reason or another, never got around to (Personally, I'll let my PhD thesis take the rap for this excessive delay!) So, Barry, if you're reading this, thanks again for letting me share these images with Australian comic-book fans everywhere.
