Museums and ancient battlefields - Syracuse 415 BC

Hi friends,
with this post I start a new “section” of my blog. It will be about my visits to ancient battlefields, museums and cities through Italy (family and money permitting). These post won’t be a tourist guide, but I’ll show the most interesting or peculiar pictures and impression I’ll take.

The first place I’d like to share with you is (guess what???): Syracuse.
It’s my wife’s city and she has her parents there (and a beautiful place to stay), so it's an usual trip for us.
But besides that it’s an amazing place to visit (if you’re interested contact me, my in-laws manage some nice home holidays).

Last time I’ve been there at last I visited the Museo Paolo Orsi (webpage), one of the most relevant museum in Sicily for greek archaeology. Here follows some pictures taken there (sorry for the quality but I made them with no flash and no tripod)

Battle beween amazons and a warrior (430BC)

Warrior and Cavalry men (525BC)

Battle beween amazons and a warrior (430BC)

Hoplites fighting (ca 500BC)

Battle between a warrior and a amazon (440BC)

Warrior (470BC)

Battlescene (500BC)

Bronze cuirass (370-340BC)

But furthermore I’ve been to the Olympieion, the scant but picturesque ruins of a Doric temple of Olympian Zeus where was fought the first battle with the Athenians in 415BC (during this battle, won by the Athenians, syracusan cavalry showed its quality and superiority).
The temple became a permanent syarcusan stronghold just over the bic camp located down in the direction of the beach.

I've got something more to show you on Syracusan, but in the next episode we'll see Etruscans and Hannibal. Stay tuned
